Let’s fold a cute origami chococat wallet for kids in less than 10 minutes. Chococat, being my favorite Sanrio, I tried to design the face of the chococat onto something functional. Luckily, I found a lovely base pouch pattern and made it in my own way.
Put a birthday greeting card inside, save money, or debit cards inside this pouch. This looks so cute to me personally. I will teach you how to craft it in less than ten steps. So, keep reading.
How to Fold Origami Chococat: Step-by-Step
To craft this chococat craft, I used the origami wallet variation designed by Alice as a base. This variation has folded ears using the squash folds on the layers of the flap.
It turned out cute. So, you can also craft other Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty and Kuromi. Now, let me teach you how to craft a chococat pouch step-by-step:
Supplies
- 21cm by 21cm square sheet of black paper
- Scrap but straight yellow, aqua and white paper sheet
- Colored marker (black and brown)
- Paper Glue
Finished Size: 10.5cm x 8cm including the ears

Step #1: Half Folds
We want two crossing creases like in a “+” by vertical and horizontal half folds. Just be sure your sheet of paper is in the square position.

- Fold the paper in half vertically, then unfold it to make the vertical centre crease.

- We simply aligned the left edge of the square with the right edge by folding it to the right and pressing the paper flat.

- Now fold the paper in half horizontally and unfold it to make a horizpntal centre crease.

- Just did so by folding the top edge of the square onto the bottom edge.
Step #2: Quarter Folds
Now, let’s make 4 quarter folds to partition the square into 16 creased sections.

- Fold both the left and right edges of the square towards the vertical centreline traced by the crease.
- Unfold both flaps to see the creases.
Note: These are called quarter folds because each creased section is 1-4th of the original height of the square sheet.

- See the two more vertical creases on either side of the middle vertical crease.

- Now fold both the top and bottom edges of the square towards the horizontal centreline and unfold again.

- There are two more creases on either side of the horizontal centreline, too. In total, there will be 16 squares.

- Refold the paper in half by folding the bottom side onto the top side of the sheet.
Step #3: Folds for the Ears
Note: Make sure you bottom side of the half-folded square sheet is the hinged side and the top is open.

- Diagonally fold the bottom corners of the half-folded sheet.
Note: You have to consider the diagonal of the bottom leftmost and rightmost creased squares out of the 8 on the sheet.

- Unfold the corner folds.

- Unfold further into a square sheet, but with the creases you made.
Step #4: Folds for the Sides

- Quarter-fold the right side of the square.
This fold will have four squares. The two middlemost have diagonal creases as a result of the fold in step #3.

- Pinch or keep pressed down the bottommost square along with the right triangle above it, and fold the remaining flap to the right about the hypotenuse of the triangle and the quarter hinge.
Note: You will notice the top part has also stood perpendicular to the table after this fold. This is normal and needed here.

- Quarter-fold the left side a little to the right.
- Press flat only the square and triangle above it.
- Fold the remaining to the left.
Observation: You can notice kinds of side walls and a back wall with a base four squares.
Step #5: Fold The Front

- Half-fold the base with a fold away from you like above. Now, you have finished making the front of the wallet or pouch.
Step #6: Fold The Back

- Turn the folded model such that the front wall lies on the table like the base, while the base faces you.
Observation: The base will have a centre crease.

- Now, try to fold the left and right walls onto the base, including only the near square and the far bottom triangle.
- Then, try to fold the other top triangle onto the bottom triangle that has been on the base.
- This will move the back wall near you a little. Fold this onto the base, too.

Here is how your folded model must look.

- Bring the flap onto the pouch, and fold the entire section with open flaps onto the closed section.
Step #7: Intermediate Folds for Squash

- Turn your work 90 degrees so that the open edge of the flap is at the bottom.
- Fold and align the bottom of the flap with the top of the edge of the purse.

- Only hold the frontmost layer of the folded flap and diagonally fold both corners to opposite sides.
- Unfold them again.
Note: These are the base folds for the squash fold we need. So, they are intermediate ones.
Step #8: Squash Fold
- Insert your fingers inside the folded flap and and lift it up a little. Here is the back view of this:

- Push the corners down straight about the marked creases and let half of the triangles fold on the remaining side of the base.

Observation: Two squash triangles on either side, two layers of the flap near the top and a single layer near the bottom.
Step #9: Another Ear Fold

- Fold the corners of the single-layer side of the flap diagonally. You will also have to lift the top front layer a little to accomodate for the edge. That is to insert the edge inside.
Step #10: Turn the Flap

- Leaving a little height above the bottom, fold the flap back towards you.
Step #11: Insert the Top Inside the Pouch

Insert the extra portion of the flap inside the pouch. This might be a little harsh, so fold in half a little, insert one corne

- I cut two triangles from the yellow sheet for the ears. (2cm by 3.5cm triangle)
- Two big circles for the eyes, and draw the dark spot onto them. (2.2cm diameter)
- A blue rectangular strip for the neck strap. (same width as the pouch)
- Right triangles with longer heights have the whiskers.
Your origami chococat purse will be finished after gluing the cutouts onto it.
