It’s starting to feel like summer, so I decided to dedicate this week’s plushie discussion to pom pom sea creatures! I will talk about how to DIY a shark, jellyfish, Koi fish, octopus, and colorful fish plushies, all using handmade pom poms, plus a little bit of macrame.

Way #1: Craft a Shark Plushie
This oh-so-cute baby shark plushie, crafted using the “yarn wrap stacking” technique, has been featured in a popular crafting blog, too. Requires a tissue paper roll as a base for pom pom, safety beads, and just two colors of yarn.
It also has a cute white-and-pink mouth, a yarn water blow-up, and fins attached later on. Start with 6 wraps of beige and 100 wraps of brown side-by-side on the roll.
This will let you make the belly and body together. Stack two similar and trim the selected portions as guided in the tutorial. This is called the stacking technique. You can also use white as a belly color.
Way #2: Craft a Pom Pom Jellyfish Plushie
Let’s craft this kawaii eye Jellyfish keychain for kids by making a ball pom, macrame chains, and yarn-wrapping puffs. Acrylic wool yarn is recommended in two shades of aqua (dark and light). We will also be using a 6.8 cm pom maker to make the head of the Jellyfish.
My favorite part is the kawaii open mouth made from cutouts of red and pink felt. A basic macrame chain cord of 12 strands is needed to make the tentacles for the Jellyfish.
For each of the bobble in the middle, make 15 wrappings around one finger and secure with the needle. Use it as a backpack hanging or car hanger.
Way #3: Craft a Funny Fish Plushie
This wacky goldfish plushie is just so funny, cute, and authentic that I recommend making it now! Luckily, only ball pom poms are needed to craft the body; no special trimming or stacked-wrapping techniques. Start with acrylic yarn in two shades of orange and in white.
Then, with a 6.8 cm pom maker, craft a big ball pom pom (use both sides of the pom maker!). Make another ball pom with a 4.8 cm pom maker and attach it strongly to big one.
You can also trim a little to make the body more continuous. Insert the eye ball in the big pom pom and attach the safety beads. For the fins and the tail, you will want to make and sew the macrame chains.
Way #4: Craft A Colorful Plushie Fish
These pom pom custom fish plushies are the cutest and the easiest ever. There are colorful felt pieces attached around the body, the bulging sphere eyes, and ring mouth.
Start with 50 rounds in the baby pink, then 60 rounds with hot pink. Stack both the wrappings and attach them.
Then finish both the pom poms together and trim to have a capsule bicolor pom pom. For the tail, 30 rounds are needed, and to make it about the same trim is needed as for a pom pom heart. Try it in any color form blue to purple!
Way #5: Craft An Octopus Plushie
This pom pom octopus plushie is inspired by the Koro-sensei, a grinning octopus character with a graduate hat. It is not a pom pom, but a yarn-wrapped tissue paper plushie.
To start with, make a ball with 20 layers of standard tissue paper and cover the entire ball with yellow yarn. Thin yarn works better, so try to have one skein.
Be sure to secure the yarn after wrapping using a sewing needle. For arms, similar small balls are needed. The teeth are just a wrapping of white yarn with black yarn embroidery. Craft one as a gift for a graduate!
