Crochet Shark Garlic Pouch Pattern: Written Instructions

This adorable crochet shark pouch (often styled as a traditional garlic bag for good luck) is a delightful project that doubles as a cute, functional accessory.

The pattern is worked from the tip of the nose downwards in the round, before splitting off to create the upper and lower jaws. It is finished with separately crocheted teeth, fins, and a tail, plus a long chain for the strap.

Materials:

• Yarn (cotton or acrylic) in your Main Color (e.g., Blue or Grey) and White (for the teeth)
• 2.5mm Crochet hook
• Stitch markers
• Yarn needle (for sewing parts together)
• Scissors

Pattern Instructions

• Rnd 4: 1 sc in each st around. Join, ch 1. (12 sts)
• Rnd 5: (1 sc, 1 inc) repeat 6 times. Join, ch 1. (18 sts)
• Rnd 6: 1 sc in each st around. Join, ch 1. (18 sts)
• Rnd 7: (4 sc, 1 inc) repeat 3 times, then 1 sc in each of the remaining 3 sts. Join, ch 1. (21 sts)
• Rnd 8: 1 sc in each st around. Join, ch 1. (21 sts)
• Rnd 9: (1 sc, 1 inc) repeat 10 times, then work 1 sc in the final st. Join, ch 1. (31 sts)

Upper Jaw (Worked in Rows) You will now stop working in the round and work back and forth in rows to create the top of the mouth.

• Row 16: 1 sc in the next 17 sts. Leave the remaining sts unworked. Ch 1, turn. (17 sts)
• Row 17: 1 dec, 6 sc, 1 inc, 6 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (16 sts)
• Row 18: 1 dec, 12 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (14 sts)
• Row 19: 1 dec, 10 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (12 sts)
• Row 20: 1 dec, 8 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)
• Row 21: 1 dec, 6 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (8 sts)
• Row 22: 1 dec, 4 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (6 sts)
• Row 23: 1 dec, 2 sc, 1 dec. (4 sts). Fasten off and weave in the end.

Lower Jaw (Worked in Rows) Attach your main color yarn to the very next unworked stitch from Rnd 15 (stitch #18).

• Row 16: 1 sc in the next 14 sts (this will bring you to the other side of the upper jaw). Ch 1, turn. (14 sts)
• Row 17: 1 dec, 12 sc. Ch 1, turn. (13 sts)
• Row 18: 1 dec, 4 sc, 1 inc, 4 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (12 sts)
• Row 19: 1 dec, 8 sc, 1 dec. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)
• Row 20: Skip the first st, 6 sc, skip the next st, sl st in the last st. Fasten off and weave in the end.

Teeth Using White yarn. You will make two identical strands (one for each jaw).

• Chain String: Ch 4, sl st in the 3rd chain from the hook (this creates a sharp little point). Ch 4, sl st into the 3rd chain from the hook. Repeat this process to create a continuous jagged string of teeth. Measure it against the upper and lower jaws of the shark until you have the correct length for each. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Sew one string to the inside edge of the upper jaw, and the other to the lower jaw.

Small Fin (Top Fin) Using Main Color.

• Ch 5. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work: 1 sl st, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc.
• Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Long Fin (Bottom Fin) Using Main Color.

• Ch 8. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work: 1 sl st, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 dc in the last chain.
• Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Tail Using Main Color.

• Ch 13. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work: 1 sl st, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 3 dc in the next chain, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sl st, 1 sl st in the last chain.

Assembly & Strap

1. Sew the small fin to the top center of the shark body.
2. Sew the long fin to the bottom center of the shark body.
3. Sew the tail vertically to the back end of the shark (between the fins).
4. Attach your yarn to the side of the pouch and chain a long strap (to your desired length), then attach the other end of the chain to the opposite side of the pouch. Weave in all remaining ends.
