DIY Pumpkin & Cat Hairstyle Headband

The idea is to cover a bare headband with coiled black chenille stems, shape a 3D arched cat body, head, ears, and curved tail, and attach them to the band. Miniature textured pumpkins are created by coiling orange wire onto green stems and singeing stem tips for realism.

Difficulty Level & Explanation

Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate (Beginner-Friendly with adult supervision)

Materials

  • Plain headband (plastic/metal base)

  • Black pipe cleaners (chenille stems)

  • Orange pipe cleaners

  • Green pipe cleaners

  • Pair of yellow cat eyes (plastic/printed craft cabs)

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Craft scissors

  • Cylindrical rod or marker/pen (mandrel for coiling)

  • Lighter (for singeing chenille fuzz on pumpkin stems)

Folds & Techniques Used

  • Spiral Wrapping: Wrapping pipe cleaners uniformly around the headband frame.

  • Concentric Disk Coiling: Spiraling wire tightly flat from the center outward to build the circular head.

  • Triangular Pinch & Fold: Folding small loops into pointed, compact triangle ears.

  • Frame Weaving / Over-Wrapping: Bending an elongated oval loop and wrapping wire around it to create a dense, arched cat back.

  • Double-Twist & S-Curve Bending: Doubling a trimmed wire, twisting it tightly, and sculpting an expressive curved tail.

  • Mandrel Spring Coiling: Wrapping orange wire tightly around a rod to make a ribbed spiral spring.

  • Threading & Ring Cinch: Passing a green stem through an orange coil, looping both ends into a circle, and twisting to form pumpkin lobes.

  • Heat Singeing: Lightly flashing stems with a flame to burn off fuzzy nylon fibers for crisp stems.

Learn to Make the Pipe Cleaner Black Cat Headband

Learn the whole method of making this plush Halloween witch craft using pipe cleaners in this tutorial:

Quick Frame-by-Frame Making Guide

  • [00:07 – 01:15] Wrap the Headband Base: Apply hot glue to one tip of the headband and anchor a black pipe cleaner. Wrap tightly in a spiral along the entire headband, adding new stems with glue until fully concealed.

  • [01:16 – 01:54] Form the Cat’s Head: Coil a black pipe cleaner into a tight, flat circular disc, tucking and securing the outer tail end.

  • [01:55 – 02:18] Create the Ears: Fold and wrap short black pipe cleaner segments into two small, dense, pointed triangles.

  • [02:19 – 03:09] Build the Arched Body: Form a long, arched loop from a black stem to establish the back profile. Wrap successive black stems tightly around the loop until an elongated, arched cat body forms.

  • [03:10 – 03:49] Shape the Tail: Cut a black pipe cleaner, fold it in half, twist tightly along its length, and curve it into a lively S-shape.

  • [03:50 – 04:37] Assemble Cat on Headband: Hot-glue the arched body onto the top edge of the wrapped headband. Glue the circular head onto the front shoulder, attach both triangular ears to the head, and secure the curved tail to the rear end.

  • [04:38 – 05:40] Craft Mini Pumpkins: Tightly wrap an orange stem around a cylindrical rod to form a ribbed spring coil. Slide it off, thread a green pipe cleaner through the hollow center, bring both green ends together to loop the orange coil into a sphere, and twist tightly at the top. Trim excess green wire and singe slightly with a lighter to define the pumpkin stem. Repeat to create additional pumpkins.

  • [05:41 – 06:03] Final Details & Finishing: Hot-glue one pumpkin beside the cat’s front paw and another onto the curled tip of its tail. Glue the two yellow cat eyes onto the face.

  • [06:04 – 06:11] Finished Showcase: Display the completed wearable Halloween headband.
