Bring timeless winter elegance to your holiday crafts with this stunning lace Christmas tree ornament! Crafted in pure snowy white, this delicate evergreen features an airy, openwork design that looks like a frosted forest pine. A dainty four-petal flower crowns the top like a shining star. Its outer edges branch out in graceful, puffy scalloped shells that resemble snow-covered boughs, framing a solid center and a charming little trunk at the bottom.

Difficulty Level

Level: Intermediate (or Confident Advanced Beginner)

Why:

  • Cluster Stitches: The pattern relies heavily on 2-double crochet and 3-double crochet clusters worked together into chain spaces to create the puffy lace shell edges.

  • Mixed-Stitch Rows: Each row requires balancing openwork lace arches on both margins while simultaneously increasing solid double crochet stitches across the middle.

  • Precision & Counting: Achieving a balanced, symmetrical tree triangle requires precise hook placement into chain spaces, accurate turning chain management, and counting stitches before centering the bottom trunk.

Difficult Stitch Breakdown: 3-Double Crochet Cluster (3dc cl)

The 3-double crochet cluster (3dc cl) is the signature stitch in this pattern that creates the puffy, textured boughs along the tree’s outer edge:

  • Start the first leg: Yarn over, insert your hook into the designated chain space, yarn over, and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops (2 loops remain on hook).

  • Start the second leg: Yarn over, insert your hook into the same space, yarn over, and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops (3 loops remain on hook).

  • Start the third leg: Yarn over, insert your hook into the same space once more, yarn over, and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops (4 loops remain on hook).

  • Join together: Yarn over one final time and pull the yarn through all 4 loops on your hook. Chain 1 to lock the cluster if required by the pattern.

(Note: A 2dc cl is made the exact same way, but stopping after step 2 and pulling through all 3 loops on your hook).
