Last time, I showed you how to make a watermelon paper fan by accordion-folding the paper and attaching rolled paper handles. Now, let me show you an even easier method that makes a strong and ELEGANT watermelon fan without an accordion-fold and has a craft stick handle and frame.
The idea is to punch the hole in the popsticks, weave a string through to weave them, and prepare the fan structure. Then we shall just attach the watermelon slice cutout, draw the seeds, and attach the rind strips. It results in a cleaner and more beautiful fan than you can prepare in minutes. So, craft one with the kids!

Time: 20 Minutes
Materials Needed
- 6 Popsicle sticks
- A pencil or a hole-making tool
- An old face mask (we will use the bendy nose wire from it)
- Glue
- Scissors
- Red A4 paper
- Green paper
- Black marker
Steps to Make Your Watermelon Fan
1. Make holes in the sticks
Take your 6 popsicle sticks. Carefully punch a hole through each stick, leaving about 2 inches from the top. You can use a pencil or a tool to help push the hole through, such as a punchole maker.
2. Join the sticks together
Take the string or bendy wire, or ear string, out of a face mask. Insert it through the holes in all 6 sticks to group them into a set.
Secure the sticks by rolling the ends of the string into little coils on either side. Add a drop of glue to keep the coils safe. This makes the folding base of your fan!
Note: Be sure not to glue the sticks, too.
3. Prepare the red paper
Take your A4 red paper. Cut a smooth semicircle shape out of the middle of the bottom edge. This cutout gives the bottom part of your stick base room to move.
4. Glue the sticks to the paper
Spread your connected popsicle sticks out evenly so they look like a fan.
Place the red paper on top of them, lining up the semicircle cutout with the center point where the sticks are tied together. Glue the sticks flat onto the red paper.
5. Cut the fan shape
Once the glue holds the sticks in place, grab your scissors. Trim the top of the red paper into a large curve, following the rounded shape made by the tops of the fanned-out sticks.
6. Add the green rind
Cut a curved strip out of your green paper that matches the length and shape of the top of your fan. Glue this green strip right along the top curved edge of the red paper to make it look like the outside of a watermelon.
7. Draw the seeds
Use your black marker to draw little teardrop-shaped watermelon seeds all over the red paper. Let the ink dry, and your cute DIY watermelon fan is all done and ready to keep you cool!
