DIY Popsicle Sticks Rainbow Craft for Summer

Make this colorful, CUTE popsicle sticks rainbow & cloud craft with the kids! This is a hands-on summer vacation activity that kids can complete within 30 minutes. We shall use cotton pads as an alternative to the paper cloud cutouts. This way, it feels a lot more 3D and puffy. They can turn it into a wall hanging, fridge magnet, or greeting card topper, and also a lemonade stall decoration.

While I have discussed a whole bunch of rainbow crafts for kids, such as the rainbow countdown craft and more, this is definitely my favorite.

Kids can paint the craft sticks before making this craft, or you can give them a pack of pre-colored sticks. This will make the craft a lot more engaging, and they won’t have to wait for the sticks to dry. The cloud also has CUTE googly eyes, a smile, cheeks, and yellow dots all around. Now, let me show you how they can make it.

What You Need

Here is what you need to make this quick rainbow kids’ craft for summer vacations:

1. Jumbo Popsicle sticks: 6 or 7 sticks, pre-colored or painted in rainbow order (Pink/Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Teal/Blue, Purple)
2. Cotton pads: 6-7 makeup-removal pads (or white felt/foam circles). You can also just take the felt, the foaming sheet, or the cardstock cutouts.
3. Glue: A hot glue gun (for adults) or liquid craft glue
4. Googly eyes: 2 small plastic eyes
5. Markers: A black permanent marker and a yellow/pink highlighter.
6. Work surface protector: A sheet of parchment paper or wax paper

Quick Rainbow Craft for Kids: Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these step-by-step instructions to let the kids make this rainbow and cloud craft from colored craft sticks and cotton pads:

Step 1: Set Up Your Workspace

Lay down a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper over the table. This will prevent any glue from sticking to your table and make it easy to peel the craft off once dry.

Step 2: Align the Rainbow Popsicle Sticks

Place the red painted rainbow stick on the table and apply a line of hot glue on the right edge of the stick.

Then, take the dark orange stick and place it to the right. Similarly, light orange, Green, Blue/Teal, and Purple.

Make sure the edges are lined up evenly.

Arrange your colored popsicle sticks side-by-side on top of the parchment paper in rainbow order.

Step 3: Build the Fluffy Cloud Base

Take your round cotton pads. You will need about 5 or 6 pads to make a fluffy cloud shape. Apply hot glue to the upper section of your glued popsicle sticks.

Layer the cotton pads on top of each other, overlapping them slightly to make a puffy cloud texture that hides the top edges of the popsicle sticks. You will make two rows of cotton pads, with the top one having more overlapping pads.

Step 4: Create the Cloud’s Face

Add the eyes: On the rightmost cotton, use glue to attach two googly eyes onto the top half of this pad by making two glue dots.

Draw the smile: Use a black marker to draw a cute, happy smile just below the eyes.

Add the cheeks: (Optional) Use a pink marker to dot small cheeks on either side of the smile.

Step 5: Add Finishing Touches

Take a yellow marker or highlighter and add tiny dots or stars to the other cotton pads to give the cloud a magical, shimmering effect.

Step 6: Let It Dry and Display!

Allow all the glue to cool and dry completely. Peel your finished rainbow cloud off the parchment paper. Your adorable craft is now ready to hang up, display, or gift to someone special!
