Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Hat Base
Take the cardboard tube and use your scissors to cut a small ring about one inch wide. This will be the base of the gnome’s hat.
2. Cut the Red Yarn
Cut many pieces of red yarn. Each piece should be about 10 to 12 inches long. You will need enough to cover the whole cardboard ring.
3. Cover the Ring
Fold a piece of red yarn in half. Put the folded loop through the center of the cardboard ring. Pull the two loose ends of the yarn through the loop and pull it tight. This is called a “hitch knot.” Do this all the way around the ring until the cardboard is completely hidden.
4. Shape the Hat
Take all the loose ends of the red yarn and push them through the middle of the cardboard ring to the other side. This creates the “brim” or the folded edge of the hat. Straighten the yarn out so it looks neat.
5. Make the Top Pom-Pom
Take a small piece of red yarn and tie it tightly around the bundle of loose yarn, about an inch from the top. Use your scissors to trim the yarn above the knot to make a round, fluffy pom-pom.
6. Create the Gnome Body (Beard)
Take the white yarn and wrap it around your fingers many times (about 30-40 times) until you have a thick bunch. Take a separate piece of white yarn and tie it tightly around the middle of the bunch. Use your scissors to cut the loops on both ends to make a big, fluffy pom-pom. This is the gnome’s body and beard.
7. Put the Gnome Together
Put a little bit of stuffing (or extra yarn scraps) inside the red hat to help it keep its shape. Use the hot glue gun to put a line of glue around the inside edge of the red hat. Press the white fluffy pom-pom into the hat and hold it until the glue dries.
8. Add the Nose
Find a good spot on the front of the white yarn, just under the edge of the hat. Put a small drop of hot glue there and press the small bead onto it.
