Today, you will learn how to crochet this summer capybara plush wearing a cute fish-balacava and an elegant sling bag. This is the same sleeping capybara doll version, or I should say the improved version of the capybara amigurumi. This crochet fish hat also looks funny in one way, as it is shaped like a whole fish.

In the demonstration, it is crocheted with the thin plush yarn. Thin plush yarn is perfect for amigurumi like this capybara doll, as you don’t end up with a giant crochet plushie, this way. Crochet Capybara Doll Plushie: Round-by-Round Pattern

Below are the step-by-step instructions for the amigurumi capybara wearing a fish hat with the assembly, or what you call, the finishing touches:

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Chenille/velvet bulky yarn (or Milk Cotton 125g) in Brown (for the capybara) and Yellow (for the fish hat).
  • Crochet hook: 3.0 mm for chenille yarn (or 2.5 mm if using milk cotton).
  • Black safety eyes.
  • Polyester fiberfill for stuffing.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, and scissors.
  • Blush or red marker for the cheeks.

Abbreviations

  • MR = Magic Ring
  • X = Single crochet (sc)
  • V = Increase (inc – 2 sc in one stitch)
  • A = Decrease (dec – 2 sc together)
  • F = Double crochet (dc)
  • E = Treble/Triple crochet (tr)

Capybara Arms (Make 2, Brown Yarn)

  • Round 1: MR, 6X (6)
  • Round 2: 6V (12)
  • Rounds 3-6: 12X (12)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Do not stuff. Flatten the open end and sew it closed, then sew the arms to the sides of the body.

Fish Hat Base (Yellow Yarn)

  • Rounds 1-7: Follow the exact same instructions as Rounds 1-7 of the Capybara Head to reach 42 stitches.
  • Rounds 8-12: Ch 2, 42F around. Join with a sl st at the end of each round. (42)
  • Round 13: [5X, 1A] x 6 (36)
  • Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Fish Head / Snout (Yellow Yarn)

  • Round 1: MR, 6X (6)
  • Round 2: [2X, 1V] x 2 (8)
  • Round 3: [1X, 1V] x 4 (12)
  • Round 4: [2X, 1V] x 4 (16)
  • Round 5: [3X, 1V] x 4 (20)
  • Round 6: [4X, 1V] x 4 (24)
  • Fasten off leaving a long tail. Stuff it lightly and sew (or glue) it to the front of the fish hat.

Fish Tail (Yellow Yarn)

  • Row 1: Join yarn at the side of the hat (in the middle of the F stitch rows). Crochet 6X vertically along the posts of the stitches. Ch 3, turn.
  • Row 2: 2E, 1T, 2E, 1T, 2F, sl st into the last space. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fish Top Fin (Yellow Yarn)

  • Row 1: Join yarn at the top center of the hat. Crochet 8X evenly in a straight line from front to back. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 2: 1X, 1T, 1F, sl st, 1F, 1T, 1X. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing Touches

  • Add safety eyes to the capybara face and embroider a small snout.
  • Apply blush to the capybara’s cheeks.
  • Add safety eyes to the sides of the yellow fish head on the hat.
  • Place the hat on top of the capybara’s head!
