Author: Talha

This is part 3 of the crochet “duck doll costume” series. Today, you will learn how to crochet this quick and easy frog hat for this white duck doll plush for beginners. With this hat, our duck will look even cuter and gift-ready. The hoodie crocheted as a balacava also features the crochet ties for tying it.

You can also insert the safety eyes in the stuffed balls on the top, or otherwise, it will make the cute frog ears. You can also crochet the losto bear hoodie version, as well as the Mother’s Day duck plushie version, following my other tutorials.

I will soon also provide a FREE pattern to crochet this bae duck plushie that you can crochet in both the large and medium sizes. With the thin plush yarn, you will end up with a pretty small duck, and so you will also have to crochet the costume in the same size. Now, continue reading for the full frog duck hoodie pattern.

Crochet Googly-Eyed Froggy Duck Duck Costume: Round-by-Round Pattern

Here is the written pattern for crocheting this frog duck plushie with the assembly in the end:

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Chenille/velvet plush yarn (Len nhung gấu) in Lime Green (main hat and outer eyes) and a small amount of White (inner eyes).
  • Other Tools: 5mm crochet hook, fiberfill stuffing for the eyes, tapestry needle, scissors, and sewing/positioning pins.

Abbreviations Used

  • ch: Chain
  • st / sts: Stitch / Stitches
  • sl st: Slip stitch
  • sc: Single crochet
  • hdc: Half double crochet
  • inc: Increase (2 sc in the same stitch loop)
  • hdc-inc: Half double crochet increase (2 hdc in the same stitch loop)
  • dec: Decrease (crochet 2 single crochets together)

1. The Main Frog Hat (Lime Green)

The base of the hat starts in joined rounds to create the crown,
then transitions to flat turning rows to create the open front area for the duck’s face.

  • Round 1: Start with a magic ring. Ch 1, work 8 sc into the ring. Sl st to the first sc to join. [8 sts]
  • Round 2: Ch 2. Work 8 hdc-inc around (2 hdc in each stitch, starting right in the joining stitch). Sl st to join. [16 sts]
  • Round 3: Ch 2. Work a pattern of [1 hdc, 1 hdc-inc] repeated 8 times around. Sl st to join. [24 sts]
  • Round 4: Ch 2. To keep the base flat and perfectly circular, offset the increases: work 1 hdc, 1 hdc-inc. Then, repeat a pattern of [2 hdc, 1 hdc-inc] 7 times. Work 1 hdc in the final remaining stitch. Sl st to join. [32 sts]
  • Round 5: Ch 2. Work 32 hdc around (1 hdc in each stitch). Sl st to join. [32 sts]
  • Round 6: Ch 2. Work 32 hdc around, but do not slip stitch to join at the end of this round. [32 sts]

  • Rows 7–9: Ch 2, turn your work. Crochet 32 hdc back across the row. Repeat this for rows 8 and 9 to form the open face flap of the bonnet. Do not cut the yarn at the end of Row 9. [32 sts]

Bonnet Straps & Tassel Ties:

  • First Strap: Directly from the corner of Row 9, ch 20 to create the tie.
  • Tassel Ball: Ch 2 more. Turn and work a cluster of 4 half-closed hdc stitches into the 3rd chain from the hook. Pull the yarn through all loops on the hook to close the cluster, ch 2, and sl st right back down into that same chain loop. Fasten off.

  • Second Strap: Attach Lime Green yarn to the opposite front corner of Row 9. Ch 20, then repeat the exact same tassel ball instructions. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

2. The Frog Eyes (Make 2)

The frog eyes are worked as small 3D spheres that shift from a white center to a green backing.

  • Round 1 (White): Start with a magic ring. Work 6 sc into the ring. On the 6th single crochet, pull through with the Lime Green yarn to change colors seamlessly. Pull the ring tight and sl st to the first stitch to join. [6 sts]

  • Round 2 (Lime Green): Ch 1. Work 6 inc around (2 sc in each stitch, starting in the joining stitch). Sl st to join. [12 sts]
  • Round 3: Do not work in joined rounds anymore; continue in a spiral. Work 12 sc around (1 sc in each stitch). [12 sts]
  • Round 4: Work 6 dec around (crochet 2 stitches together 6 times). [6 sts]
  • Finishing: Sl st to the next stitch and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff the eye firmly with a small ball of fiberfill before closing.

Assembly Instructions

  • Thread your tapestry needle with the leftover green yarn tail from an eye.
  • Weave the needle through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches from Round 4 and pull tight to seal the opening of the eyeball completely.
  • Use sewing pins to place both eyes symmetrically on top of the hat (typically around Rounds 4 and 5 of the main hat base).
  • Sew the eyes securely to the green hat shell.
  • Place the finished frog hat onto your amigurumi duck body and tie a sweet bow underneath its beak!
