Video Tutorial to Make Purple & White Christmas DIY Snowflake

Today, learn how to DIY this six-pointed, two-tone snowflake star using white and purple glitter EVA foam strips. Purple and white strips are looped concentrically to form layered petals, then heat-creased with a lighter to create sharp, pointed tips. These six main petals are adhered radially to a tightly coiled foam disc. Six smaller white strips are looped and pinched into pointed diamond accents and glued between the main petals. The centerpiece is completed with a silver rhinestone filigree and a purple pearl bead.

Tutorial to Make A 6-Petal Snowflake

Level: Intermediate

Why: While the cutting and assembly are straightforward, shaping the petals requires heat-creasing EVA foam over an open flame (lighter). This demands precise hand control to melt the foam just enough to pinch crisp, pointed tips without scorching or melting through the delicate glitter layer.

Materials Used

• Glitter EVA foam sheets (white and purple)

• Scissors

• Ruler and marking tool

• Hot glue gun and glue sticks

• Handheld lighter (for heat-setting folds)

• Silver rhinestone floral embellishment / spacer

• Purple pearl cabochon / bead

Folds & Techniques Used

• Concentric Loop Fold: Layering and curving the shorter purple strip inside the longer white strip to produce a dual-toned teardrop.

• Flame Heat-Creasing (Apex Pinch): Warming the folded apex of the loop over an open flame and instantly pinching it with fingers to set a permanent sharp peak.

• Tight Coil / Roll: Rolling a foam strip tightly into a solid circular disc (quilling style) to serve as the structural mounting hub.

• Marquise / Diamond Pinch: Looping a small strip, pinching both the glued base and the opposite curved end, and heat-setting them into a two-pointed diamond petal.

• Radial Interlocking Assembly: Arranging alternating petals symmetrically around a central circular core.

Quick Frame-by-Frame Guide

1. Cut the Foam Strips (00:06–00:22): Cut all strips to $1\text{cm}$width: 6 white strips ($10\text{cm}$), 6 purple strips ($8\text{cm)}$,  6 white strips ($4\text{ cm}$), 1 extra white strip for coiling the center hub.

2. Assemble the Large Petals (00:23–00:42): Glue one end of an $8\text{cm}$ purple strip to a $10\text{cm}$ white strip. Loop and glue the purple strip at the base, then loop and glue the white strip over it.

3. Heat-Shape the Tips (00:43–01:03): Fold the outer white loop’s peak in half, flash it briefly with a lighter flame, and pinch firmly to create a crisp pointed tip. Repeat for all 6 large petals.

4. Make the Core Hub (01:04–01:26): Apply hot glue along a white foam strip and roll it tightly into a flat circular coil.

5. Attach Main Petals (01:27–01:55): Glue the bases of the six large petals symmetrically around the outer edge of the coiled disc.

6. Form Diamond Accents (01:56–02:22): Glue each $4\text{cm}$ white strip into a loop. Heat both ends with a lighter and pinch them into sharp, double-ended diamond shapes (make 6).

7. Glue Inner Accents (02:23–02:35): Apply hot glue between each pair of large petals and mount a white diamond petal into each gap.

8. Add Center Embellishments (02:36–03:03): Hot glue the silver rhinestone floral spacer onto the center, then glue the purple pearl bead directly in the middle to complete the ornament.
