Learn how to make a fluffy and soft slime from Vaseline with this FREE recipe. You can use this alternative whenever you don’t have borax, glue, or contact lens solution. In fact, it makes a better slime than you can make using the glue!
The idea is to use all-purpose flour and salt in a vaseline and water mix, so it should be cheaper, a 5-minute and quick activity that you can also teach the kids. They can then make the themed slime recipes that I have already discussed here.
This method makes a soft, dough-like slime that is easy to play with and smells great. Plus, it’s a cool science experiment to see how items like flour and salt can change textures when you mix them.
What You’ll Need
- Vaseline (or any Petroleum Jelly should work fine)
- Warm Water
- Food Coloring or Acrylic Paint (Optional)
- Salt
- All-Purpose Flour
Step-by-Step Instructions
This is the first-ever written recipe that will let you make a dough slime, and here are the step-by-step instructions:
1. Prep the Base
Add a big scoop of Vaseline into a small mixing bowl. Since petroleum jelly is thick, adding about two tablespoons of warm water will help break it down so it mixes more easily with the other ingredients.
2. Add Color (Optional)
If you want your slime to be colored, add a few drops of food coloring or paint now. Stir it into the water and Vaseline mixture until the liquid is a solid and has a uniform color all around.
3. The Salt Trick
Pour in about a teaspoon of salt. While salt doesn’t “activate” this like borax would, it helps with the texture and preservation of the flour-based dough. Stir well until the salt is mostly dissolved.
4. Add the Flour
Now start adding all-purpose flour, one tablespoon at a time. This is the most important part! As you add the flour, the mixture will start to thicken from a liquid into a sticky paste.
5. Mix and Knead
Continue adding flour and stirring until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Once it’s no longer a liquid, pick it up and begin kneading it with your hands.
Tip: If it’s too sticky, add a pinch more flour. If it’s too crumbly, add a tiny dab more Vaseline.
6. Play!
Once the slime is smooth and holds its shape, it’s ready. The Vaseline gives this slime a unique, soft feel compared to traditional glue slimes.
