Tutorial to Make Chenille Stem Pumpkin in a Witch Hat

Follow this guide for learning how to make a chennile stem pumpkin:

Materials Needed

  • Pipe Cleaners: Orange (3 x 30cm, 1 x 8cm), Black (4 x 5cm, 1 x 30cm, 1 x 3cm).

  • Tools: Scissors, Hot Glue Gun, Pliers/Tweezers, Marker or Pen (for coiling).

  • Accessories: Two small googly eyes, keychain loop, and chain.

Instructions

Step 1: Create the Pumpkin Shell

  • Prepare the strands: Take three 30cm orange pipe cleaners. Twist their ends together on one side, then twist the entire length of the three strands into one thick, sturdy orange rope.

Beginner?

  • Coil the rope: Take a thick marker or pen. Wrap the twisted orange rope tightly around the marker to create a spring-like coil.

  • Shape the pumpkin: Slide the coil off the marker. Take an 8cm orange pipe cleaner and thread it through the center of the coil. Pull the ends of the 8cm piece together to bend the coil into a circular sphere.

  • Secure: Twist the ends of the 8cm piece together and tuck them inside the coil. Adjust the “ribs” of the coil to ensure the pumpkin looks round and even.

Step 2: Make the Witch Hat

  • Form the base: Take four 5cm black pipe cleaners and bundle them together.

  • Wrap the cone: Take a 30cm black pipe cleaner. Starting at the top of the 5cm bundle, wrap the long strand tightly around the bundle, moving downwards. As you wrap, slightly widen the spiral to create a cone shape.

  • Create the brim: Once you reach the bottom, continue wrapping the remaining length of the black pipe cleaner in a flat, outward circle to form the hat’s brim.

  • Trim and shape: Use scissors to trim any excess from the 5cm internal strands and the brim to make it look neat and sharp. Flatten the brim so it sits flush.

Step 3: Create the Face

  1. The Mouth: Take a 3cm black pipe cleaner. Using tweezers or small pliers, bend the wire into a sharp “zig-zag” or “M” shape to look like a spooky stitched mouth.

  1. Assemble the face:

    • Apply hot glue to the bottom of the witch hat and press it onto the top of the orange pumpkin.

    • Glue the zig-zagged black mouth onto the front of the pumpkin.

    • Glue two googly eyes just above the mouth.

Step 4: Final Touch

  1. Attach Keychain: Thread a small metal ring or chain through the top of the witch hat or through the center of the pumpkin to turn it into a portable charm.

Your spooky Pumpkin Witch craft is now complete!
