Crochet Reversible Watermelon Bag: Written Instructions

This is a fun project. You will make a mini watermelon bag. Inside this small bag, there is a big net bag. It is great for shopping. It is good for the earth. When you put heavy things in it, the net bag will stretch. This means you can hold a lot of items in it.

Materials Needed

• Milk Cotton Yarn: Red, White, Light Green, Dark Green, and Black. You will use this for the hard outside shell.
• Thin Baby Yarn: Red, White, Light Green, and Dark Green. You will use this soft yarn for the inside net so it is not too thick.
• Crochet Hook: A hook size that matches your yarn choice.
• Tapestry Needle: To sew the seeds and hide the yarn tails.
• Scissors: To cut your yarn.
• Stitch Markers: To help you mark your places.
• Bag Strap: An extra chain or strap if you want to wear it on your shoulder.

Part 1: The Watermelon Shell Panels

Make Two Panels:

• Round 2: Chain 2. Make 2 dc in every single stitch around. Join with a sl st. You will have 28 stitches.

• Round 4: Chain 2. Repeat this pattern: 2 dc, then 1 dc inc. Do this 14 times. Join with a sl st. You will have 56 stitches.
• Round 5: Chain 2. Repeat this pattern: 3 dc, then 1 dc inc. Do this 14 times. Join with a sl st. You will have 70 stitches.
• Round 6: Chain 2. Make 1 dc in every single stitch around. Do not increase. Join with a sl st, cut the yarn. You will have 70 stitches.
• Round 7 (White Yarn): Attach the white yarn. Chain 2. Repeat this pattern: 4 hdc, then 1 hdc inc. Do this 14 times. Join with a sl st, cut the yarn. You will have 84 stitches.
• Round 8 (Light Green Yarn): Attach the light green yarn. Chain 2. Make 1 hdc in every stitch around. Join with a sl st, cut the yarn. You will have 84 stitches.
• Round 9 (Dark Green Yarn): Attach the dark green yarn. Chain 2. Make 1 hdc in every stitch around. Join with a sl st. You will have 84 stitches.

For Panel One Only (The Loop Side):

• Round 10: Chain 1. Work in the back loops only. Make 1 sc in the next 74 stitches. Then chain 4. Make 1 sc into the exact same 74th stitch. This creates the closing button loop. Make 1 sc in the remaining stitches to the end. Join with a sl st and cut the yarn.

For Panel Two Only (The Plain Side):

• Round 10: Chain 1. Work in the back loops only. Make 1 sc in all 84 stitches. Join with a sl st and cut the yarn.

Part 2: Sewing The Seeds

• Take your tapestry needle and the black yarn.
• Sew seeds on the red part of both panels, right around Round 4.
• Go up and down to make a small V or seed shape.
• Hide the black yarn carefully on the inside back so it looks clean and no black lines show.

Part 3: Joining The Panels

• Place Panel One and Panel Two together.
• On Panel One, find your button loop. Count 11 stitches away from the loop and place a stitch marker.
• On Panel Two, place two markers that are 21 stitches apart from each other. This top space will stay open.
• Line up the two panels with the right sides facing outward.
• Attach the yarn at the marker. Put your hook through the outer half loops of both panels.
• Make a sc to join them together. Keep doing this all the way to the second marker.
• When you reach the second marker, stop joining the panels.
• Continue to make 20 sc using full stitches only on Panel Two. This makes a clean top edge for the opening. Join with a sl st and cut the yarn.

Part 4: The Net Bag

• Important Note: Use the thin Baby Yarn for this part so the bag is not bulky when folded.
• Round 1 (Red Yarn): Attach yarn at the side corner of the opening. Only crochet on the inner edge of Panel Two (the side without the loop).
• Chain 6. Skip 2 stitches. Make 1 sc in the third stitch. Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the opening.
• For the very last loop of the round: Chain 3, then make a dc into the very first stitch of the round.
• Rounds 2 to 16: Chain 6. Make 1 sc in the middle of the next big loop. Repeat this for a total of 27 loops.
• For the 28th loop (the end of the round): Chain 3, then make a dc into the first stitch. You will always have exactly 28 loops.
• Round 17 and 18 (White Yarn): Change color. Do the exact same loop pattern for 2 rounds.
• Round 19 and 20 (Light Green Yarn): Change color. Do the exact same loop pattern for 2 rounds.
• Round 21 and 22 (Dark Green Yarn): Change color. Do the exact same loop pattern for 2 rounds. Do not cut this yarn.

Part 5: The Bag Handles

• The handles will need open spaces. Count to leave 6 loops empty for the handle space, and 8 loops empty for the side between the handles.
• Chain 1. Make 2 sc in the first net loop. Make 1 sc in the knot between the loops.
• Chain 80 to make the first long strap.
• Skip 6 net loops. Attach the chain with a stitch in the knot of the next space.
• Make 5 sc in the next net loop, and 1 sc in the knot. Repeat this 8 times for the side edge.
• Chain 80 to make the second long strap.
• Skip 6 net loops. Attach the chain with a stitch in the next knot.
• Make 5 sc in the next net loop, and 1 sc in the knot. Repeat this 7 times.
• In the very last net loop, make 3 sc. Join with a sl st.
• Final Handle Round: Chain 1. Make 2 sc. Then make 80 hdc all the way across the first long chain strap. Make 48 sc across the side edge. Make 80 hdc across the second long chain strap. Make 45 sc across the last side edge. Join with a sl st and cut the yarn.

Part 6: The Leaf Button

• This leaf will go inside the loop to close the hard shell bag.
• Attach the dark green yarn to the middle edge of Panel Two. Pull up a loop.
• Chain 9.
• Make a sl st in the second chain from your hook.
• In the next chains, work in this exact order: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc in the exact same chain, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, and 1 sl st at the end.
• Chain 1 and cut the yarn. Weave in your ends.

Part 7: Side Loops For Extra Strap

• Attach dark green yarn 4 stitches away from the side corner on the inside.
